ADDRESSING YOUR UNIQUE NEEDS IN UNIQUE WAYS

CBT-I and insomnia therapy for adults and older adolescents in Calgary and online across Alberta, with support for difficulty falling asleep, nighttime waking, early waking, and sleep-related worry.

Insomnia can affect more than nighttime sleep. It can shape energy, concentration, mood, relationships, work, school, and the ability to function consistently throughout the day. Catalyst Psychology offers Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia, or CBT-I, for adults and older adolescents in Calgary and online across Alberta.

How INSOMNIA CAN SHOW UP

Insomnia can show up as difficulty falling asleep, waking frequently during the night, waking earlier than intended, or feeling that sleep is consistently light, disrupted, or unrefreshing. Even when enough time is available for sleep, the mind and body may struggle to settle into a reliable sleep pattern.

Over time, sleep can begin to feel like something that must be controlled or achieved. You may find yourself monitoring the clock, calculating how many hours remain, going to bed earlier to compensate, staying in bed longer, or worrying throughout the day about whether you will sleep that night. These understandable efforts can sometimes increase pressure around sleep and make the cycle harder to interrupt.

Insomnia can also affect concentration, memory, mood, emotional regulation, motivation, relationships, and performance at work or school. Therapy can help identify the patterns maintaining the problem and develop a structured approach to rebuilding more consistent and restorative sleep.

HOW CBT-I CAN HELP

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia is a structured psychological treatment designed to address the thoughts, behaviours, routines, and sleep patterns that can keep insomnia going. It involves more than receiving general advice about sleep hygiene.

CBT-I may focus on rebuilding a stronger connection between bed and sleep, establishing a more consistent sleep-wake pattern, reducing time spent awake in bed, addressing sleep-related worry, and changing habits that may be unintentionally weakening the body’s natural drive for sleep. Treatment may also include relaxation or de-arousal strategies when physical tension or mental activity makes it difficult to settle.

The work is collaborative and guided by your individual sleep patterns. Sleep diaries and other structured observations may be used to understand what is happening across the night and evaluate whether changes are improving sleep over time. The goal is not to force sleep, but to create the conditions in which sleep can become more reliable and less effortful.

INSOMNIA THERAPY AT CATALYST PSYCHOLOGY

Catalyst Psychology offers CBT-I for adults and older adolescents in Calgary and online across Alberta. Treatment is shaped around your sleep concerns, health context, daily schedule, goals, and the specific patterns that may be maintaining insomnia.

The work often begins with a detailed review of your sleep history, nighttime patterns, daytime functioning, routines, stressors, and previous attempts to improve sleep. From there, therapy focuses on developing a practical treatment plan and making careful, sustainable adjustments based on how your sleep responds.

Insomnia may also occur alongside anxiety, depression, ADHD, chronic stress, life transitions, pain, hormonal changes, medication effects, or other sleep conditions. When symptoms suggest that medical assessment or specialized sleep testing may be appropriate, therapy can be coordinated with your physician or another qualified healthcare provider.

At Catalyst Psychology, insomnia therapy is structured, collaborative, and grounded in meaningful change. The aim is to help you understand your sleep more clearly, reduce the struggle surrounding it, and build a healthier and more dependable relationship with sleep.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can CBT-I help with chronic insomnia?

Yes. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia is an evidence-based treatment for persistent insomnia. It can support difficulty falling asleep, nighttime waking, early waking, inconsistent sleep patterns, and the daytime effects of disrupted sleep. Treatment focuses on the patterns that maintain insomnia rather than relying only on short-term symptom relief.

Is CBT-I different from sleep hygiene?

Yes. Sleep hygiene involves general habits that can support healthy sleep, such as managing caffeine, maintaining a suitable sleep environment, and following a consistent routine. CBT-I is a more structured treatment that also addresses sleep scheduling, time spent awake in bed, sleep-related thoughts, conditioned arousal, and behaviours that may be maintaining insomnia.

Do I need a diagnosis or sleep study before starting?

Not necessarily. Therapy can begin with an assessment of your sleep concerns, history, routines, and daytime functioning. A sleep study is not required for every person experiencing insomnia. However, medical assessment may be recommended when symptoms suggest sleep apnea, restless legs, medication effects, circadian rhythm disruption, or another medical or sleep condition.

Can therapy help with sleep anxiety and overthinking?

Yes. Insomnia can create worry about bedtime, frustration during nighttime awakenings, clock-watching, and repeated attempts to control sleep. CBT-I can help reduce sleep-related pressure, address unhelpful beliefs about sleep, and develop strategies for responding differently when the mind or body remains alert at night.

Do you offer online CBT-I across Alberta?

Yes. Catalyst Psychology offers CBT-I in person in Calgary and online across Alberta. Online treatment can include sleep assessment, sleep-diary review, individualized CBT-I strategies, and ongoing adjustments based on your progress.
